New Moon in Capricorn

New Moon Capricorn

Welcome to the New Moon in Capricorn which wanes fully at 9:17 PM EST.  The Moon, as we know, highlights our emotional nature, instinct and habit patterns, and unconscious drives which stem from our innermost fears, desires, and needs.  Capricorn is feminine cardinal earth.  It is the harvest sign, where we reap the benefits or drawbacks of the seeds we’ve sown.  The Moon in Capricorn is practical, and disciplined, and with 5th house energies, supports family and other group or community settings or activities and gives us a sense of responsibility in dealing with group issues.

Aspecting this New Moon is the conjunction with the Sun, Pluto, and Venus, the sextile with Mars, square with Uranus, and the north node in Leo in the 12th house which gives us further hints at the best intentions for the energies as they present themselves, and the north node in Leo highlights leadership and the burdens of that often resulting in being alone, but recognizing the benefit in that is being in a position to share your gifts on a greater scale

The conjunction is an aspect that is typically intensely unified.  The Sun and the Moon together in the wrong sign can wreck havoc, but in disciplined Capricorn, the Moon doesn’t get too overly emotional and the Sun’s sense of logic has a calming effect on the energies.  Venus is the planet of aesthetics and appreciation for the finer things, and with Capricorn, that appreciation goes to what’s practical, and what brings balance and harmony and making things easier.  So for the conjunction with this 3 planets in Capricorn, there’s no struggle go give all the planets involved their own expression, because they’re truly working together.  Pluto is the planet of transformation and it’s energies generally take us where we don’t always want to go on our own.  If you have a tendency to go off half cocked without thinking, Pluto has the capacity to change that tendency.

The sextile is a beneficial aspect, and Mars is the planet of assertiveness, and aggression and shows us where we need to show a little more initiative, and persistence in getting things done. Mars is the extra push to get the Moon, Sun, and Venus moving in the right direction.

The square is an aspect of tension that creates a certain amount of stress, but the stress is often purposed to get things moving in a certain direction.  Uranus is our sense of uniqueness and independence, our drive for freedom. In Aries, that sense of independence can take on a harshness that could upset the harmony that the Moon, Sun, and Venus have created.  But with the north node in Leo, Uranus is the support necessary to walk that line alone, if that’s the course that’s required.  Aries is bold and assertive and takes on the new challenge with 8th house energies adding a bit of magic to the mix that lends for insight and a heightened intuition.

Today in the Hebrew is the Rosh Chodesh, or New Moon for the month of Shevat.  Today’s Torah portion tells the part of the story of Moshe when he goes to Pharoah to ask for the freedom of the Children of Israel, and God has told Moshe that he has hardened Pharoah’s heart and that he’s purposed to say no so that God can show him miracles and wonders so that Pharoah will know he is the one true God.   So the story goes that given his first choice, Pharoah says no, and God brings the first plague, given a second choice, Pharoah says no again, and God brings another, until the last and final plague, the death of the first born, and Pharoah finally chooses correctly.

I was watching this movie over the last few weeks, and I knew I had to write down the theme and concept because it was going to come up again for this Moon ceremony.  The movie was called, “Remory,” an obscure movie I had never heard of, where this man and his company have created a machine that records memories. As he’s giving a lecture he states, ” every memory has been clouded by what’s happened to you since because the new events add different filters,.”  and I thought, what are the filters?  The filters must serve to give you insight into how you have been shaped and molded by the event to give us an opportunity to grow from it.  And different people remember the same situation quite differently, and perhaps they remember details that you don’t remember that give them a different lesson.   The filter may lend a sense of being able to look back and see how you learned from something bad you may have done or something bad that may have happened, and see how you survived.  The New Moon in Capricorn is disciplined and practical and doesn’t look at situations with rose colored glasses, because we know we repeat things until we get them right, whether we learn the lesson from making the wrong choice or not, we must still face it again either in this life or the next, until we get it right… I did this and this happened, I see what my error was, and now I can see the same situation in where I am today – will I choose better?

According to the Zohar, the permutation for the month of Shevat is Hei Yud Vav Hei and is coded in the verse, ” “המר ימירנו והיההוא” (“…and if he converts it at all, then both it and that for which it is converted to shall be holy…” – Leviticus 27,33) which infers if we get it right, it is consecrated to us, we’ve grown, we’ve raised our awareness, our wisdom and vibration to a higher level and can move onward.  Shevat is Aquarius, and Kabbalah says, Aquarius has no tolerance to the things that connect everyone to the physical realm such as habits, tradition, commitments, etc., and that they have to exchange boundaries with freedom.  So that is the challenge we face for the month of Shevat, exchanging those things that keep us bound, our habits, the things that keep us tied to old toxic patterns that get us nowhere, for freedom – so for this first New Moon of 2018, we must choose better, as if our lives depend upon it, because peace in life does depend on the choices we make.

At this New Moon, because the Sun has not quite moved into the energies of Aquarius, we focus upon the ruling planet which is Saturn, which is governed by the hebrew letter Beit, the house. The letter Beit and Saturn were the focus of the last New Moon, as well, but said if we desire the blessings in life we should always look forward, but today, we review the past before stepping forward to make sure of our footing.

The letter Beit represents the 12th Path on the Kabbalistic tree of life connecting Kether, the crown with Binah, which is understanding, and the Magus in the Thoth Tarot.

“The True Self is the meaning of the True Will: know Thyself through Thy Way!” DuQuette, Lon Milo. Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot (p. 99). Red Wheel Weiser. Kindle Edition.

magusThe Magus, according to tradition, is the title of the second highest level of spiritual illumination a human soul can attain, and few of us come close.  Knowing thyself has to include a greater understanding of why we make the choices we do which is the first step to a plan to learn how to avoid old habit patterns that get us into trouble.  Kether, the crown, represents the will of God, the will for oneness, discovering the inter-connectedness of all of creation. Binah imparts the energies we need to comprehend ourselves in relation to the all giving us logic, discipline, and education to provide a structure within which to practice discipline.

The sephirot of Kether and Binah are located on the upper triad of the tree of life.  Kether plus Chokmah equals Binah – one plus 2 = three, so the number 3 is of significance in this path.   Coincidentally, the 12th path, in gematria 1 plus 2 equals 3.  Hints to deeper meaning of the number 3 can be found in Torah by every place the word “shalosh” appears… Noah begat 3 sons, Noah told to take animals 3 years old, Jonah in the belly of the whale 3 days, and in Genesis or Bereshit, the waters separated to form the earth in 3 days,  etc. At Giza plateau, there are 3 pyramids, each with 3 equal sides, so the triangle or 3 sided geometric shape is believed to point to greater meaning in our lives.  Additionally, the numeric value of the word Shalosh, Shin-lamed-shin is 300 plus 30 plus 300 – or broken down to 9 which is only equally divisible by 3. Then there’s Sir Issac Newton’s work in physics and the 3 laws of motion.  We also have many that believe bad things happen in groups of 3, so it’s definitely food for thought on how it plays a part in who we are. And while we’re on the subject of who we are, our DNA is also encoded in sequences of 3 called codons or triplets, where they have also discovered that certain sequences are not of earthly origin.   The guided meditation of last moon ceremony reminded us to look at our circumstances with our inner eye so that we could see the truth of how things are.  Our inner eye is our 3rd eye said to be the connecting link between the physical and spiritual worlds. The Magus represents the idea of manifestation which as we discussed last New Moon festival, includes consciousness and action to make creation.  The study of alchemy, taking two elements and creating something new or making a third element.   Here, and today, we can point to the past plus our present and decide our future, if we are self aware enough to see how one fits with the other.  The great “I am” Eh-heyeh – I am that I am and I will be that which I will be, also infers, I was what I was.

Chic Cicero in his book Scrying the Tree of Life writes of the 12th path:

“This path has a great deal to say about the idea of psychic vision.  The “Transparency” of the path implies a certain clarity that is  needed for true revelation. It is the place of true prophecy or seership.  This is not simply the lower psychic reflexes, but rather the  pure and clear root of all higher spiritual visions. It is the  revelation of the Divine Self as it emerges. From this vantage point,  one is able to observe the arcane workings of all dimensions  through various methods of psychic awareness and inner sight.  The Hebrew letter Beth means “house.” This indicates that the  Twelfth Path is one of containment, sanctuary, or a place of “being  within.” It is the dwelling place of the divine. Since it connects the  pure consciousness in Kether to the maternal subconsciousness in  Binah, this path represents the supreme self-consciousness that is  the supreme “seer,” which knows and sees all.”

the travel: from malkuth to Yesod and then to tiphareth spheres 10 – 9 –  6 then up the 17th path to the temple of Binah.

While we have done this path meditation before, like we find with the meditation on the tarot cards, every instance, the result is a different one.

For any newcomers – we’ve moved into doing a guided meditation on the tree of life path associated with the energies of the day.  The guided meditation is taken from Chic Cicero’s Book Scrying on the Tree of Life with the corresponding solfeggio frequency tuning into the background.
